Train the Trainer

A program to develop trainers who are credible, structured and autonomous.

Duration
24 hours
Formats
In person
Program
Certificate
Cohort
8 to 12 participants
Participants gathered in a group training activity.
The starting point

Knowing your subject is not enough to know how to teach it.

In an organization, the people asked to train are often chosen because they have mastered their trade. But expertise and the ability to pass it on are two different capabilities.

Effective training calls for presence, an understanding of adult learning, facilitation methods, an instructional architecture, tools and the ability to observe what is actually being learned.

From one person's expertise to an organization's training capacity.

  1. ExpertiseA person holds knowledge.
  2. TransmissionThey learn to structure and communicate it.
  3. LearningThey create the conditions for others to learn.
  4. DesignThey build a genuine learning experience.
  5. AutonomyThe design lives on in the organization.
The program

Four stages to build a real capacity to pass knowledge on.

  • Practice
  • Facilitation
  • Feedback
  • Certification

The program alternates between learning, practice and application to a real training project.

  1. Presence and delivery

Adapt the program

A program applied to your reality.

Participants work from their own expertise, their responsibilities and the training they are called on to design or facilitate.

Learning by doing

A trainer develops through practice.

  1. Diagnostic
  2. Practice
  3. Observation
  4. Feedback
  5. Adjustment
  6. Design
  7. Transfer
  • SituateInitial assessmentIdentify experience, strengths and the situations to master.
  • TargetIndividual objectivesDefine what each participant needs to build.
  • ObserveDemonstrationSee a reference practice and decode the trainer's choices.
  • AnalyzeCase studiesWork from real training situations.
  • PractiseExercises and micro-facilitationFacilitate short sequences under realistic conditions.
  • ProgressObservation and structured feedbackReceive precise observations on the effects produced.
  • DesignSupervised designBuild a training design with support.
  • EmbedReal projects and validationWork on the organization's actual content.
Beyond the training

Skills in your trainers. Tools that stay in the organization.

Depending on the engagement, the program can lead to the creation of reusable instructional assets.

  • Training plan
  • Instructional design
  • Trainer's guide
  • Facilitation deck
  • Detailed notes
  • Learning activities
  • Case studies
  • Participant materials
  • Instructional resources
  • Assessment tools
  • Transfer plan

Possible outputs, depending on the engagement.

An example of a design produced in the health sector

Training designed to live on without its designer.

A workshop was built so that it could be facilitated by internal trainers. The package includes the deck, the detailed notes, the trainer's guide, the instructional intentions, the facilitation methods, the points to watch, the participant materials, the activities and the assessment.

The documentation is not there to archive the training: it is there to allow someone else to facilitate it.

  1. Design
  2. Document
  3. Prepare
  4. Transfer
